Our Opportunity:

Advice Technology Engineering is part of the Schwab Technology Services organization supporting the Investor Services business organization. We are responsible for building applications for our Financial Consultants who provide advice and counsel to individuals and families on their financial needs, including portfolio management, investment management, retirement planning and much more.

As a Senior Staff Database Administrator, you will help us to manage and modernize various database technologies within Advice Technologies. You will use your strong engineering disciplines, innovation, curiosity, drive and a passion for helping our teams drive customer value. You will have the opportunity to work with a team of remarkable engineers, managers, business leaders and other talented engineering teams to build innovative solutions for our customers.

What you’ll do:

  • Analyze and document the inventory of existing database technologies and structures across all environments

  • Design and develop modern database structures, standards, controls, procedures and best practices to ensure data integrity and adherence to security requirements

  • Ensure that database designs and system capabilities meet user and data requirements

  • Define access permissions and privileges across environments

  • Automate recurring, repetitive and redundant database tasks

  • Actively collaborate with teams in ongoing product maintenance and development, including design, development, review, integration, test, and deployment activities

  • Maintain database integrity, availability, and restorability

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance measures

  • Maintain and enhance applications written with ETL tools such as Informatica

  • Develop sequence diagrams and process flow development, data profiling, data analysis, and logical and physical data modeling

  • Evaluates the integration of new tools or technologies based on the capabilities of the existing infrastructure

  • Create advanced tests, develop complex databases, and tune database performance, reviewing database performance trends and identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Responsible for planning the installation of databases and related applications, development upgrades, and new releases

  • Performs capacity planning and projection for future growth

  • Work collaboratively in an Agile Delivery Team understanding the nature of the work we do and determining how to break down complex work items into small deliverable units for delivering business value

What you have:


  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a related field

  • The ideal candidate should have at least 7 years Database Administration experience, with 3 years or more experience with NoSQL database management

  • Candidate must be an experienced DBA who has worked on Oracle 11g, SQL Server 2012, MySQL, DB2 and MongoDB

  • Strong experience using SQL, PL/SQL, and No SQL

  • Strong experience with performance optimization and tuning with database applications

  • Advanced knowledge of database backup and recovery strategies

  • Ability to work in a Unix environment including an ability to write scripts in Unix

  • Provide Database technical support for Technology and Application Delivery projects

  • Deep analytical and troubleshooting skills to overcome data obstacles

  • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Positive attitude, enthusiasm, professionalism and strong work ethic with high level of integrity


  • Familiarity working within Agile Frameworks, such as Scrum

  • Exposure to data visualizations tools such as Tableau

  • Exposure to ETL tools such as Informatica

  • Experience or familiarity with Atlassian suite of products (Jira, Confluence, HipChat, Bamboo, Bitbucket)

  • You are driven by innovation, understanding new tools and technologies and have a commitment to lifelong learning
